* Denotes the same serial number appearing on more than one rod of the same era. Based on duplicate serial numbers, it appears that the Impregnated lines of rods were recorded separately by Leonard and may require a separate list dedicated to Impregnated and Special Series rods.
(a) This is estimated based on factors such as recollections from owners, invoice dates, sales slips, third-party ledger information, and catalog information.
(b) Based on comparing rod models and features with those in catalogs for a given year.
(c) Model numbers are listed as per case/tube labels or rod markings. If no information is available, a model number is assigned (followed by a "?") based on features and specifications.
(d) Configuration refers to the number of rod sections. For example, a 2/2 is a 2-piece rod with 2 tip section; a 2/1 is a 2-piece rod with 1 tip section; a 3/2 is a 3-piece rod with 2 tip sections; a 4/2/2 is a 4-piece rod with 2 mid sections and 2 tip sections.
(e) Per catalog descriptions, label designations, or rod markings. In certain cases, this designation is per the insistence of the owner of the rod, in which case it is noted with a "e."
(f) When the actual rod weight is known, it is listed; otherwise, the weight provided by the manufacturer, the label/tag, or the catalogs is used. This is noted with "a" for Actual Weight, "t" for Hang Tag or Tube Label Weight, or "c" for Cataloged Weight.  When a weight range is shown in the catalog, the heaviest weight is used.
(g) Unless ferrule measurements are provided by the manufacturer, these are estimates per the owner's measurements.
(h) Based on manufacturer specifications or observation. Natural or Blonde cane is untreated or sometimes oven tempered. Flamed is typically dark or brown-toned. Stained is based on stain color. Impregnated is often dark, depending on the resin used. Acrylic Impregnated appears natural or blonde.
(i) Based on observation and manufacturer specifications. See key to abbreviations above. For 1976 catalog year, Leonard created a newly designed 3-piece screw-locking reel seat. The reel seat was updated again for the 1979 catalog year to a 2-piece design.
(j) Based on observation. Wood used for reel seats can be rather difficult to identify. Most wooden spacers prior to 1976 catalog year were made of Butternut. Polished Mahogany was introduced in the 1976 catalog. Walnut was used on Duracanes about this time and after. Exotic woods were included in the 1978 catalog. Tiger (Curly) Maple shows up in the 1979 catalog.
(k) Based on observation. Leonard designations are used for the shape of the grips/handles. These were often referred to as Leonard cigar handles and Leonard Western handles. A Western handle, or grip, is also generally described as a reverse half Wells.
(l) Length is most often measured by counting the number of cork rings.
(m) Based on observation. Black or Chrome Carbide guides were most often used prior to the switch to Aluminum Oxide ("Ceramic") guides for the 1976 catalog year (production would have started in 1975). Mildrum Slim Carboloy or Agate guides were most often used starting in 1978 for the 1979 and later catalog years.
(n) Based on observation or owner description. Prior to 1976 catalog year (likely 1975 production year), rods were most often wrapped in Reds (Varnished rods) and Greens (Duracane Impregnated rods). Wrap colors changed for 1976 catalog year, and changed, again, for 1979 calendar year.
(o) From the Leonard shop fire in 1964, until approximately 197x, when a new stamp, "THE / LEONARD® / ROD / H.L. LEONARD ROD CO. / MAKERS," was created, rods were stamped "HLL / H.L. LEONARD ROD CO.® / MAKERS." The "H.L. LEONARD ROD CO. / THE ROD MAKER / SINCE 1869" appears to have been created in 197x. Impregnated series of rods after 1978 often carry the "HLL / H.L. LEONARD ROD CO.® / MAKERS" stamp.
