4. Acme Split Bamboo Rod company, New York ( C.E.Wheeler, Maker) Circa 1880 – 1890 . This extremely rare Big game rod may be the only one in existence. C.E.Wheeler & H.L. Leonard were associates in 1860 when the split bamboo beveling machine was developed. . Acme was a brand owned by John P. Moore's Sons, and subsequently, Schoverling, Daly & Gales. Charles E. Wheeler was one of the rod makers who built Acme rods for these firms in the 19th century. The Five (5) Ft. Tip is fitted with four (4) unique “German Silver" Raised Agate rod guides with the unique “German Silver “ Three-Ring “ removable, Agate Tip-top. The uncapped tip ferrule reveals the rod was made prior to 1890. The rod butt is made of carefully selected second growth hickory and carefully covered with split bamboo canning. The butt is fitted with a extra heavy “German Silver” reel seat. “German Silver” butt cap is marked Acme Split Bamboo Rod Company, New York with the two (2) concentric rings on the bottom of the butt cap “C.E.Wheeler” Maker’s identification mark, EXTREMELY RARE, RARE $7,000 USD.
