8’ Heddon Deluxe Pal #70 Bass Action Fiberglass Fly Rod ~ C or HCH ~ c. 1955 ~ RARE This is an exciting offering. It is one of the finest examples of a Heddon fiberglass rod I have had the pleasure to offer; it may even be the nicest example of this model in an uber rare 8’ bass action in existence. This is the complete original package; it even has the original Registration Card with information on rod care and use! I don’t see these models in the marketplace very often, but this is the only 8’ Bass action taper I have ever seen in the #70 Deluxe model. Based on catalog descriptions, Heddon may have offered this configuration for only two years, 1954 and 1955. Combining this very limited production with the remarkable, unused condition makes this an exceedingly rare rod. As noted on the rod, this is an 8’ Heddon Deluxe Pal model #70 Bass Action fly rod, rated for a C or HCH (7 wt.) line, in a 2-piece configuration. It features a mahogany brown tubular glass blank beautifully wrapped in nut brown silk with goldenrod trim. The finish is excellent with some very minor rough patches on the ferrules. The rod has Perfection guides and tip top, antique black nickel mountings, and black anodized featherweight ferrules. The ferrules are a size 17 (in 64ths of an inch), and the fit is velvety smooth with a loud popping sound when separated. All sections are full length and straight. All guides and ferrules are tight. The down screw-locking “Hold-tite” reel seat is composed of Tenite in an attractive marbled, mahogany color to match the blank. The grip still has its original Heddon logoed plastic wrapper. The plastic wrap had some tears which I reinforced with scotch tape. The rod weighs 4.95 ounces with screw-locking reel seat. It is supplied in its original poplin bag and original labeled aluminum case with special compression locking cap. The tube has several surface scratches. As with many of Heddon’s outfits, it is harmoniously wrapped and packaged. The colors of the blank, wraps, reel seat, bag, and tube all blend nicely into a coordinated package. As mentioned above, it is amazing that this rod still has its Registration Card. This is a medium action rod, and, frankly, I would start with a WF6F line for my casting stroke. I wouldn’t be shy to try various lines in the 5 to 7 wt. range on this rod. The length and action combine to make this a rod with great versatility. I could see this rod handling most trout and bass situations from battling bass on poppers to pulling big browns out of the wood with large dry flies, nymphs or streamers. This is an exceptional rod. Key Features: - High grade, early tubular glass rod by Heddon - Exceptional taper to handle a variety of situations - Harmoniously executed finish with a gorgeous wrap combination against a beautiful mahogany blank and matching rod bag - “Hold-tite” reel seat with antique black nickel components - Perfection guides and tip top - Black anodized featherweight ferrules - Considered to be an extremely rare Heddon model, especially in the 8’ Bass taper - NOS, unfished with Heddon wrapper still on the grip - Original Heddon Registration and Care Card included Please email with any questions.
