5’ HEDDON No. 1209 Bamboo Bait Casting Trade Rod ~ Scarce ~ c. 1930s
Manufacturer: Heddon®

I am pleased to be offering this very fine example of a scarce Heddon trade rod made around the 1930s. The rod is marked in standard Heddon fashion above the winding check as a 5’ model #1209. This is only the second rod of this model I have handled and only the third known. The rod was built in a staggered ferrule, two-piece design with short butt and longer tip. The sections measure 26” (butt) and 34 3/4" (tip). The rod was also designed with a gracefully swelled butt for added strength and power. The aged varnish over tempered cane provides for a striking brown tone appearance. The rod is attractively wrapped in purple tipped gold silks (both darkened under the aged varnish) at the guides and evenly spaced purple intermediate wraps. All guides, wraps, and ferrules are original and tight. The ferrule fit is excellent. The varnish is in very good condition and appears to have a newer light protective coat. There are a few minor spots where the varnish is thin. The cane is structurally sound, and both sections are straight. The rod sports Heddon’s fully functioning spiral locking reel seat with a finger grip. The rod weighs 4.95 ounces and tapers to a size 18 ferrule. This translates into a Light bait casting rod. There is a simple elegance to this rod. Please review the photos for further details. If you have any questions or would like more photos, please don't hesitate to ask.
