This is one of the finest Chubb rods I have seen in years, so I am quite pleased to be offering such a fine example from the top of the T.H. Chubb Rod Co. lineup. Not only does this rod include the Chubb Registered Trademark, which was a guarantee of its highest quality, but it also features Chubb’s highest grade eight-strip construction and nickel silver components. According to Chubb, its eight-strip split bamboo rods were “King of all Rods.” The T.H. Chubb Rod Co. opined that its eight-strip rods were stronger, more durable and unequalled in action than all other rods (language which should also be familiar to students of Abbey & Imbrie rods). Based on several features, the rod was made between 1908 and the mid- to late-teens. Relevant scans from a 1908 T.H. Chubb Rod Co. catalog are included here for reference. This is a 10’ (10’1” actual length) T.H. Chubb eight-strip trout fly rod. Based on specifications, it is a model 22-8 (as shown in 1908 catalog scans). As with most of its trout and light bass rods, the rod is composed of 8-strip butt and mid, and 6-strip tips. All sections appear original; however, it should be noted that the sections vary in length. The butt measures 41 inches, the mid is 41 1/8 inches, and the tips are each 40 1/2 inches. I have only two possible explanations for the differences in section lengths: either (1) this is how it was built at the Chubb factory, or (2) the rod was rebuilt many years ago. In support of the former, there is no room in the form for longer sections. The green covered form measures 41 3/8 inches, with room only for sections measuring 41 1/4 inches or shorter. In addition, the Chubb catalog states that the No. 22-8 Trout Fly Rod was 10 to 10 1/2 feet long (as opposed to exactly 10 feet, as other rods were cataloged). I believe that this rod is all original and complete. The rod is equipped with Chubb’s highest quality nickel silver hardware, including a full metal down-locking reel seat with beautifully sculpted rails and intricately knurled ferrules. All guides and wraps are tight, and the ferrule fit is excellent. The cane is structurally sound with no issues. As mentioned, the Chubb Registered Trademark is affixed to the cane as a label above the cork grip. A small portion of the label shows a scuff mark. The 5 1/2” grip, composed of 1/2” and 3/8” cork rings, has not been cleaned and displays a color consistent with age. The ferrules are sizes 19 and 12 (in 64th of an inch), and the rod weighs 6.5 ounces. Completing the rod is the original green felt form with leather straps, which is enclosed in a canvas bag, and further enclosed in Chubb’s “New Rod Case.” Although the body of the case is in remarkable condition, the leather handle is missing, and the leather strap is deteriorating (please see photos). There is a repair where the leather strap was once attached to the tube. Despite the minor damage, these early Chubb cases are rarely seen today, so it is a special bonus to be included with the rod. Please review the photos for further details. If you have any questions or would like more photos, please don't hesitate to ask.
