12’ 3/1 “The Comet” An Octopus Rod by Edgar Sealey – Match Rod – 1950s – Rare
Manufacturer: Edgar Sealey & Sons Ltd.®
145.00
Product Available
Here is a very seldom seen Match Rod from Edgar Sealey during the 1950s. It follows the traditional concept of splicing together sections of different compositions to create a specific action. The butt section is Spanish Reed. The mid section is Spanish Reed spliced into Whole Cane; and the tip section is Whole Cane spliced into Fiberglass. Marked on the butt section above the grip is the following: “The Comet” / Made by “Sealey” / England / Match Rod. Below this is the Edgar Sealey & Sons registered trademark Octopus emblem. On the reverse is the original owner’s name. The rod is in good condition, although three guides on the butt and mid sections came off at some point and need rewrapped. The wraps are still in place (but torn), and the guides will be included with the rod. Wraps (or whippings) are olive with olive/gold jasper at the guides. There is also a short crack in the Spanish Reed near the butt ferrule (please see photos). It is reinforced with a protective wrap. The rod is equipped with a substantial 24” long grip and reel seat with green anodized sliding bands. All three sections are straight. The butt measures 49 1/2 inches. The mid measures 49 1/4 inches, and the tip is 47 inches. The size 45/64 and 21/64 ferrules fit well. The rod weighs 11.8 ounces. This is a very cool rod, and I believe it to be quite rare. Great as a historical display piece, or use it as the previous owner did. Completing the rod is a full set of ferrule plugs and the original rod bag with snap closures.
